Are there any specific guidelines or rules for members of Soka Gakkai?
Soka Gakkai, as a lay-based, modern Nichiren practice, does have specific guidelines and rules for its members. These guidelines and rules are meant to help members deepen their understanding and practice of Nichiren Buddhism, as well as maintain a harmonious community within the organization.
One of the main guidelines for Soka Gakkai members is to uphold the Three Great Secret Laws of Nichiren Buddhism, which are faith, practice, and study. This means that members should have strong faith in the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism, engage in daily practice such as chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and continuously study the teachings to deepen their understanding.
In addition, Soka Gakkai members are also expected to follow the Five Guidelines, which are based on the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. These guidelines include refraining from slander of the Law, respecting the priesthood, promoting peace and culture, engaging in dialogue and spreading the teachings, and practicing in accordance with the teachings.
Furthermore, members are also encouraged to follow the Ten Worldly Realms, which are ten states of life that all human beings possess. These realms include hell, hunger, animality, anger, humanity, heaven, learning, realization, bodhisattva, and Buddhahood. By understanding and acknowledging these realms, members can strive to overcome their negative tendencies and cultivate positive ones.
In terms of conduct, Soka Gakkai members are expected to follow the Five Principles of Conduct, which are based on the Buddhist precepts. These principles include not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, and not consuming intoxicants. These guidelines are meant to guide members towards leading a moral and ethical life.
Additionally, Soka Gakkai has specific rules and guidelines for its organizational structure and activities. These include respecting the leadership and decisions of the organization, attending regular meetings and activities, and contributing financially to support the organization's activities.
Overall, the guidelines and rules of Soka Gakkai are meant to guide members towards a deeper understanding and practice of Nichiren Buddhism, as well as promote a harmonious and respectful community. By following these guidelines, members can strive towards personal growth and contribute to the betterment of society.
