What was his relationship with Paramahansa Yogananda like?
Sri Yukteswar Giri was not only a spiritual teacher, but also a mentor and father figure to Paramahansa Yogananda. Their relationship was one of deep respect, love, and understanding.
Yukteswar first met Yogananda when he was just a young boy of 17, seeking spiritual guidance and knowledge. Impressed by his sincerity and thirst for truth, Yukteswar took him under his wing and became his guru.
Under Yukteswar's guidance, Yogananda delved deeper into the teachings of yoga and meditation, and was initiated into the ancient Kriya Yoga technique. He also received valuable lessons on the spiritual path, including the importance of balance and moderation in one's spiritual practices.
Yukteswar was a strict disciplinarian, but also had a gentle and loving nature. He would often use humor and practical examples to teach Yogananda important spiritual lessons. Yogananda later wrote in his autobiography, "He seldom laughed, but when he did, it was with such heartiness that you involuntarily joined in. His wit was the soul of his conversation, and it was not surprising that he could quote from the Bhagavad Gita with equal facility Sanskrit verses and the wittiest English epigrams."
Their relationship was not limited to just spiritual teachings, as Yukteswar also took a keen interest in Yogananda's personal life. He advised him on various matters and even helped him secure a scholarship to study at the prestigious Scottish Church College in Calcutta.
When Yogananda decided to travel to America to spread the teachings of yoga, Yukteswar gave him his full support and blessings. He even helped him prepare for the journey by teaching him English and providing him with valuable advice.
Even after Yogananda left for America, their bond remained strong. They would often correspond through letters, with Yukteswar providing guidance and encouragement to his beloved disciple.
Yukteswar's passing in 1936 left a deep void in Yogananda's life, but his teachings and love continued to guide him on his spiritual journey. Yogananda always held his guru in the highest regard and referred to him as "my beloved guru" and "my dearest friend."
In conclusion, Sri Yukteswar Giri and Paramahansa Yogananda shared a special relationship based on mutual respect, love, and spiritual guidance. Their bond continues to inspire and guide spiritual seekers to this day.
