What is the relationship between Bhagwan Nityananda and Swami Muktananda?

Bhagwan Nityananda and Swami Muktananda are related within the sacred context of the guru–disciple lineage of Siddha Yoga. Nityananda is regarded as the guru, the Siddha master whose spiritual power and grace awakened Muktananda to the state of Self-realization. Muktananda, in turn, accepted Nityananda as his principal spiritual master and became his disciple, attributing his own spiritual awakening and the very basis of the Siddha Yoga lineage to Nityananda’s influence. This relationship is not merely biographical; it is the living thread through which the tradition understands its own source of authority and spiritual energy.

Within this lineage, Nityananda is honored as the Siddha Guru whose shakti, or spiritual energy, is said to have awakened and transformed Muktananda. Through this transmission, Muktananda became the vehicle for carrying Nityananda’s legacy forward. Before Nityananda’s passing, he is said to have given Muktananda his blessing to teach and to continue the lineage, thereby affirming the continuity of the parampara, or succession. Siddha Yoga thus traces its modern line of transmission from Bhagwan Nityananda to Swami Muktananda, and then onward through later successors, seeing in that relationship the archetypal pattern of guru and disciple.

From a spiritual perspective, this relationship can be seen as the meeting of a realized master and a prepared disciple, in which the silent presence of the guru becomes the catalyst for the disciple’s inner awakening. Nityananda is remembered as a realized being whose primary mode of teaching was his very presence and grace, and Muktananda’s life and work are understood as an expression of that original contact. The unfolding of Siddha Yoga through Muktananda’s teaching and practice is therefore viewed as an extension of Nityananda’s own realization, carried forward through the bond of devotion, transmission, and obedience to the guru’s command.
