Who is Swami Prabhupada?

Swami Prabhupada, also known as His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, was a spiritual leader and the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He was born on September 1, 1896, in Calcutta, India, and his birth name was Abhay Charan De.

Growing up, Swami Prabhupada was deeply influenced by his spiritual teacher, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who taught him the principles of Krishna consciousness. In 1922, at the age of 26, Swami Prabhupada met his spiritual master and received instructions to spread the teachings of Krishna consciousness in the Western world. However, it wasn't until 1965, at the age of 69, that he finally fulfilled this mission and established the first ISKCON temple in New York City.

Swami Prabhupada's teachings were based on the ancient Vedic scriptures, especially the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam. He emphasized the importance of devotional service to Lord Krishna and the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra as the means to achieve spiritual liberation and attain the ultimate goal of life. He also stressed the importance of living a simple, austere life and following the four principles of no meat-eating, no illicit sex, no intoxication, and no gambling.

Swami Prabhupada's teachings and his charismatic personality attracted many followers, and ISKCON quickly grew into a global movement with over 600 temples, centers, and communities around the world. He traveled extensively, giving lectures, initiating disciples, and establishing temples and centers in various countries. He also translated and wrote over 70 books on Krishna consciousness, which have been translated into 80 languages and distributed worldwide.

Swami Prabhupada's dedication and determination to spread the message of Krishna consciousness inspired many people to adopt a spiritual way of life. He also initiated many social welfare programs, such as free food distribution, educational programs, and disaster relief efforts, to serve humanity and spread the message of love and unity.

Swami Prabhupada passed away on November 14, 1977, in Vrindavan, India, but his legacy and teachings continue to inspire millions of people around the world. His followers continue to carry on his mission and spread the message of Krishna consciousness, following his instructions and guidance. Swami Prabhupada's life and teachings serve as a shining example of devotion, compassion, and selfless service, and he will always be remembered as a great spiritual leader and the founder of ISKCON.
