Papaji met Ramana Maharshi in 1944, when he was only 28 years old. He had been seeking a teacher who could guide him on his spiritual journey and had heard about Ramana Maharshi's teachings. As soon as he saw Ramana Maharshi, Papaji knew that he had found his guru.

The relationship between Papaji and Ramana Maharshi was one of deep love and respect. Papaji saw Ramana Maharshi as his ultimate guide and source of wisdom. He would often speak of him with great reverence, calling him his "beloved master" and "the embodiment of grace and love."

Ramana Maharshi, in turn, saw Papaji as a sincere and dedicated disciple. He recognized Papaji's potential and encouraged him to continue his spiritual practice and share the teachings of Advaita Vedanta with others. Ramana Maharshi also gave Papaji his blessing to teach, saying, "You are my successor, you are my Shakti."

Papaji spent many years in the presence of Ramana Maharshi, absorbing his teachings and practicing self-inquiry, a method of self-discovery taught by Ramana Maharshi. He also served as a caretaker for Ramana Maharshi's ashram and helped to spread his teachings to others.

After Ramana Maharshi's passing in 1950, Papaji continued to follow his guru's teachings and share them with others. He eventually moved to Lucknow, India, where he established his own ashram and began teaching Advaita Vedanta to a new generation of seekers.
