Who founded Ananda Marga and what is its spiritual lineage?
Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar—revered as Shrii Shrii Anandamurti—laid the foundations of Ananda Marga in 1955 in Bengal, India. A polymath poet, philosopher and social reformer, he wove together ancient yogic practices with a vision for global welfare. His brainchild rapidly grew into a yoga-based social and spiritual movement, now thriving in over sixty countries.
The spiritual lineage of Ananda Marga traces back to India’s rich tapestry of Tantra and the Siddha Yoga tradition. Drawing on millennia-old techniques for subtle-body awakening, Sarkar tapped into a succession of accomplished sages—often referred to simply as the “Line of Siddhas.” Their collective insights into mantra, meditation and energy (prana) flow down through his teachings. In particular, the focus on the Divine Mother (Shakti), cosmic sound (Nada), and the crown-center (bindu) echoes classical Tantric texts, while his own Malini and Neela Tantra commentaries give fresh life to that heritage.
Rather than resting on dusty manuscripts, Ananda Marga’s approach marries this time-honored lineage with today’s pulse—think mindfulness meets social service. From stress-busting Neohumanist meditation sessions to community kitchens feeding thousands, the movement walks the talk in mental-health hotspots and disaster relief zones alike. This blend of inner transformation and outer action resonates especially now, when so many seek both personal balance and meaningful engagement. All told, Ananda Marga stands as a living bridge between ancient Siddha wisdom and the modern quest for holistic well-being.
