What are the stages of the vajra path, including ngöndro and the higher tantras?

At its heart, the Vajra path unfolds like a carefully choreographed dance, guiding the mind from its ordinary chatter into the luminous clarity of awakening. First up, the ngöndro—or “preliminary practices”—lays the foundation:

• Refuge and Bodhicitta: Taking refuge in the Three Jewels while cultivating the wish to wake all beings up together.
• Vajrasattva Purification: Reciting 100,000 syllables of the hundred-syllable mantra, washing karma away like spring rain.
• Mandala Offering: Visualizing and offering the entire universe, recognizing its dream-like nature.
• Guru Yoga: Merging with the teacher’s enlightened mind, igniting devotion and confidence.

With this sturdy base in place, the journey moves into the heart of tantric ritual and meditation—divided into the Generation (bskyed rim) and Completion (rdzogs rim) stages. During the Generation stage, one visualizes oneself as the deity, cultivating the pure-perception mantra, imagery and wisdom. This is where imagination becomes a powerful tool, transforming body, speech and mind.

The Completion stage then turns inward, dissolving those very visions into subtle channels, winds and drops. Classic methods—like the Six Yogas of Naropa—emerge here, working directly with prana and inner heat to crack open the door of bliss-and-awareness.

Beyond these steps, the Higher Tantras unfold across four classes:

  1. Kriya Tantra (Action): Emphasis on external ritual and purity.
  2. Charya Tantra (Performance): Balancing ritual with meditation.
  3. Yoga Tantra: Prioritizing inner yogic practice over external rites.
  4. Anuttarayoga Tantra (Highest Yoga): Split into Father (method-wisdom, illusory body), Mother (wisdom-bliss, clear light) and Non-dual tantras, which weave both qualities seamlessly together.

In the current digital age—where live-streamed empowerments from Himalayan masters are just a click away—this layered roadmap still shines, showing how, step by step, anyone willing to commit can transform habitual patterns into the golden fabric of awakening.
