Who are the lineage holders and current Gyalwang Drukpas?

Within the Drukpa Kagyu, the notion of “lineage holder” is most centrally embodied in the successive Gyalwang Drukpas, who are regarded as the heads of the Drukpa school. The Gyalwang Drukpa lineage is understood as the primary throne-holder line of the Drukpa tradition, carrying the responsibility for preserving and transmitting its spiritual heritage. Earlier incarnations, such as the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa before the present one, are revered as predecessors in this unbroken stream of realization and authority. This continuity of incarnations functions as a living bridge between the founding masters and contemporary practitioners.

The current Gyalwang Drukpa, recognized as the 12th in this line and known as Jigme Pema Wangchen, is regarded as the present head of the Drukpa Lineage. From the perspective of the tradition, this incarnation stands as the principal lineage holder of the Drukpa Kagyu, especially associated with what is often called the “Upper Drukpa” branch. His role is not merely administrative; it is seen as the embodiment of the blessings, teachings, and practices transmitted from the great forebears of the Kagyu and Drukpa streams. Through this office, the Drukpa Lineage maintains its coherence, its doctrinal integrity, and its living connection to the enlightened intent of its founding masters.
