Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, also known as Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo Rinpoche, is a highly respected and influential Tibetan Buddhist nun. Born in England in 1943, she became one of the first Western women to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun in 1973. Her dedication to the practice of Buddhism and her unwavering commitment to the empowerment of women in the spiritual community has led her to establish the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery.

The idea for the nunnery first came to Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo while she was on a pilgrimage to India in 1993. She visited a remote and impoverished area in the Himalayas called Lahaul, where she met a group of young girls who were eager to receive an education and become nuns. However, there were no facilities or resources available for them to do so.

Determined to help these girls and provide them with the opportunity to receive a proper education, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo started to raise funds to build a nunnery. She reached out to her students and followers around the world and received overwhelming support and donations. With the help of these donations, she was able to purchase a piece of land in Lahaul and begin the construction of the nunnery.

The nunnery was named Dongyu Gatsal Ling, which means "Garden of the Authentic Lineage" in Tibetan. The name reflects Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo's strong belief in preserving the authentic teachings of the Buddha and passing them on to future generations. The nunnery was built in the traditional Tibetan style, with a main temple, living quarters for the nuns, a library, and a school.

In 2000, the nunnery was officially inaugurated and became home to the first group of nuns. Today, the nunnery has around 100 nuns from different parts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The nuns receive a comprehensive education, including Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and other traditional practices, as well as modern subjects such as English, math, and science.

The establishment of Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery has not only provided a safe and supportive environment for young girls to receive an education and become nuns, but it has also become a center for the preservation and promotion of Tibetan Buddhist culture. The nuns actively engage in charitable and community service projects, such as providing medical care and education to the local community.
