About Getting Back Home
What is the Tenrikyo scripture, and how is it used in worship?
The beating heart of Tenrikyo’s spiritual life lies in its Three Scriptures: the Ofudesaki, the Mikagura-uta and the Osashizu. Together, they weave a rich tapestry of teachings, songs and divine guidance that shape every aspect of worship.
Ofudesaki (“Tip of the Writing Brush”)
- A collection of poetic verses penned by foundress Nakayama Miki between 1869 and 1882.
- Emphasis on joy, gratitude and living in harmony with the “Divine Parent.”
- Recited in services and studied in discussion gatherings, its imagery—of flowers blooming in drought, for example—offers a vivid roadmap to cultivating a joyful heart even when life feels rocky.
Mikagura-uta (“Songs for the Service”)
- Twelve sacred songs accompanied by dance movements, handed down from the Foundress.
- Forms the core of the Kagura Service, performed daily at the Main Sanctuary in Tenri City and in household altars worldwide.
- Singing and dancing to these melodies isn’t mere spectacle: it’s a direct dialogue with the Divine Parent, inviting adherents to “sing from the same hymn sheet” in shared gratitude.
Osashizu (“Divine Directions”)
- A living record of spiritual guidance delivered orally by the Foundress through her successors from 1887 to 1944.
- Consulted for personal counsel, community decision-making and social outreach projects—like disaster relief efforts after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, when local congregations mobilized under Osashizu guidance to support affected families.
- Published in volumes and studied by followers seeking to align daily choices with the Divine Parent’s will.
In practice, Tenrikyo worship isn’t confined to Sundays or special feast days. The Three Scriptures bookend every ritual: the Ofudesaki’s verses inspire reflection, the Mikagura-uta animates communal dance, and the Osashizu steers practical action. Whether gathering at the Grand Service in Tenri or lifting voices in a living room halfway across the globe, adherents tap into these texts to keep joy flowing, gratitude rising and divine parenthood ever at the forefront of daily life.
