About Getting Back Home
Mirra Alfassa’s contribution can be understood as a sustained attempt to anchor a higher, supramental consciousness in earthly life and, above all, in the very substance of the body. In close collaboration with Sri Aurobindo, she did not limit herself to expounding a doctrine, but undertook an intensive inner labor aimed at transforming human nature from its mental basis toward a supramental being. This work, described as operating even at the level of cellular consciousness, was conceived as preparing the ground for a new stage in evolution, in which a divine life could progressively manifest in matter. Her later years, especially, were devoted to this physical transformation, seeking to demonstrate that the usual limitations of mortality and disease could be challenged by spiritual force.
Equally significant was her effort to translate this high vision into practical paths of inner growth accessible to many. She gave concrete methods for conscious evolution that emphasized aspiration, self-awareness, surrender to the Divine, and the awakening of the psychic being, always stressing transformation rather than mere escape from the world. Every domain of life—work, education, relationships, even the smallest daily actions—was treated as a field of yoga, so that the division between “spiritual” and “ordinary” life could be gradually dissolved. Through her example, writings, and conversations, she offered guidance and inspiration to seekers, encouraging not only individual progress but a collective movement of consciousness.
Her organizational and institutional initiatives were intended as laboratories for this new consciousness. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram and its school became a setting for integral education, seeking the harmonious development of the physical, vital, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the being. Later, the founding of Auroville as an international township dedicated to human unity and spiritual progress extended this experiment to a broader human context. Conceived as “a city at the service of Truth,” it was meant to explore new forms of collective life, work, and governance grounded in inner growth rather than egoistic interests. Through these endeavors, Mirra Alfassa positioned herself as a conscious agent of evolution, working not only for individual realization but for a collective transformation of human consciousness toward a divinized life on earth.
