About Getting Back Home
From Mirra Alfassa’s perspective, the purpose of life is rooted in a profound spiritual evolution: the discovery and manifestation of the Divine within oneself and in the world. Human existence is not meant merely for personal satisfaction or escape from earthly conditions, but for a progressive unveiling of a higher consciousness that already dwells at the core of the being. This inner divine presence, often described as the soul or psychic being, is the true center around which a meaningful life can be organized. To live according to this deeper center is to move beyond the fluctuations of ego and surface desire and to find a more enduring sense of direction and joy.
Life, in this view, is part of a vast evolutionary movement from unconsciousness toward full divine consciousness, and the human being is invited to participate in this process consciously. Unlike earlier stages of evolution that unfolded without awareness, the human stage allows for deliberate collaboration through aspiration, inner discipline, and surrender to the Divine. This collaboration is not limited to an inner experience alone; it calls for a transformation of the whole nature—mental, vital, and physical—so that each part becomes an instrument of a higher, supramental consciousness. The aim is not a withdrawal from the world into some transcendent elsewhere, but an integral realization that brings the Divine down into the very fabric of material existence.
Such a purpose implies that individual progress is inseparable from a wider, collective movement. Each person’s effort to discover and manifest the Divine contributes to a broader transformation of earthly life, preparing the conditions for a more divinized humanity. The Mother envisaged a future in which consciousness would so permeate matter that even the physical body could become a more transparent vehicle of the Spirit. Thus, life is understood as a sacred opportunity: to realize the Divine within, to collaborate consciously with the evolution of consciousness, and to help shape a world where the presence of the Divine can be more and more openly expressed.
