About Getting Back Home
In the vision of Integral Yoga, supramental consciousness, or Supermind, is the divine Truth-Consciousness that stands beyond the divided operations of the human mind. It is described as a plane of absolute, self-luminous knowledge in which consciousness and force, knowledge and will, are one movement, knowing truth directly rather than through partial concepts or error. This consciousness does not proceed by analysis or inference, but by a knowledge that is integral and by identity. It therefore sees unity where the mind sees only fragments, holding multiplicity within an unbroken oneness with the Divine.
Metaphysically, supramental consciousness is the creative power that mediates between the transcendent Divine, Sachchidananda—Existence, Consciousness, Bliss—and the manifested universe. Through it, the formless Divine becomes a structured and ordered cosmos without losing its inherent truth. In this sense, Supermind bridges the gap between the highest transcendence and the world of forms, allowing the divine reality to express itself progressively in time, space, and matter. It is thus both the origin and the governing principle of a universe that is secretly divine.
For Sri Aurobindo, evolution is fundamentally an evolution of consciousness, moving from Matter to Life to Mind and destined to pass beyond Mind to Supermind. Human mentality, rooted in division and ignorance, is not the summit but a transitional stage. The supramental is envisaged as the next evolutionary step, the fulfillment of Nature’s long movement from unconsciousness toward conscious divinity. In this supramental stage, humanity is destined to be transformed into a gnostic or supramental being, in whom knowledge is spontaneous truth-vision and will is perfectly aligned with the divine intention.
The transformative function of supramental consciousness is therefore central: it is the power capable of curing ignorance and division at their root and of divinizing the entire being—mind, life, and even the physical body. Rather than seeking escape from the world, Integral Yoga looks to the descent and establishment of this consciousness in the earth-nature, making possible a divine life on earth. Such a descent is not only an individual realization but a collective and terrestrial event, opening the way to a new supramental age characterized by unity, harmony, and spiritual fulfillment.
