About Getting Back Home
Within Integral Yoga, the psychic being and the higher self can be seen as two complementary faces of the same spiritual reality, each with a distinct function in inner evolution. The psychic being is described as the evolving soul-personality, a divine spark at the core of the individual that grows through lifetimes by assimilating what is true, beautiful, and good. It stands behind mind, life, and body as their innermost center, gradually coming forward to guide the surface nature. As it awakens, it creates a deep aspiration for truth, peace, love, and union with the Divine, and it quietly presses the being toward sincerity, humility, devotion, and perseverance. Its influence purifies motives, transforms desire into aspiration, and orients thoughts, emotions, and actions toward alignment with the Divine Will. When it comes to the front, it harmonizes the personality and becomes the inner guide that bridges the individual and the Divine.
The higher self, by contrast, is the eternal, unchanging reality of being, identical in nature with the universal and transcendental Divine. It is described as the witness consciousness, the static Self or Atman above mind, life, and body, untouched by ignorance and suffering. While the psychic being evolves, the higher self does not; it remains the transcendent source and support of the entire journey. From this height descend peace, wideness, silence, light, and the powers of higher consciousness, which bring liberation from ego-identity and personal bondage. Realization of the higher self opens a vast, immutable presence and a universal consciousness that surpasses the limitations of the personal ego. It offers detachment, freedom, and a stable base for spiritual equality.
Their interaction in Integral Yoga is not merely theoretical but deeply functional in the transformative process. The psychic being provides the evolutionary impulse, personal devotion, and the discerning aspiration that protects the path from egoistic distortions and false lights. The higher self offers the transcendent peace, wideness, and universality that divinize the consciousness and allow it to stand above the fluctuations of nature. As the psychic being comes forward to govern the outer nature, and as the higher self is realized above, the whole being becomes capable of receiving and embodying higher forces of consciousness. Through this dual action, the inner soul-personality is aligned with the eternal Self, and the mind, life, and body can be progressively transformed in the light of the Divine.
