About Getting Back Home
Within the traditional understanding of the Purāṇic corpus, the Shiva Purana is attributed to the great sage Vyasa, also known as Veda Vyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa. He is revered as the legendary compiler and arranger of sacred knowledge, and the ascription of this text to him reflects the high esteem in which the Shiva Purana is held within the devotional and scriptural tradition. To name Vyasa as the composer is not merely a historical claim, but also a way of situating the text within a sacred lineage of wisdom and revelation.
At the same time, it is recognized that, like much of the Purāṇic literature, the Shiva Purana did not emerge from a single moment or a single hand alone. Rather, it bears the marks of gradual growth, with multiple contributors shaping its form over an extended period. The traditional attribution to Vyasa thus functions as a spiritual and symbolic affirmation of the text’s authority, even as the layers of composition suggest a living tradition unfolding over time.
